PYX has taken part in numerous scientific expeditions, giving our engineers and partners the opportunity to use the PYX receiver in extreme conditions.
For many years, TERIA has been regularly involved in expeditions with scientists, surveyors and other professionals, contributing to the knowledge of the world and the preservation of the environment. This is part of our commitment to ISO 14001 and the “Société à mission” status.
RENDEZ-VOUS
IN THE PYRENEES
ARIÉGEOISES
For more than 10 years, the TERIA team has been involved in the expedition led by surveyors to the Arcouzan glacier in the foothills of Mont Valier in Ariège.
The aim is to measure the evolution of one of the last glaciers in the Pyrenees. This year, the team embarked PYX on the adventure, with the aim of taking readings and monitoring the glacier in real time.
The measurements taken by PYX have highlighted significant changes since the last survey was carried out in 2016.
1st observation: the glacier has lost 6 metres of thickness
2nd observation: a cave has formed at the entrance to the glacier
As a result of these observations, the glaciologists found that the Arcouzan glacier, until now one of the most resistant, was also suffering the effects of global warming. The next post-winter measurement campaigns will have to confirm whether the volume of ice can be reconstituted or whether the trend is towards total melting.
The Arcouzan glacier is an excellent site for carrying out measurement campaigns to better understand and protect it, an environmental issue dear to TERIA’s heart. A climb that our experienced climbers successfully completed.
A TOUR
OF THE ALPS
TERIA has been a partner in the adventure of measuring Mont Blanc since 2009.
For the past 12 years, TERIA has been helping surveyors to determine summit altitude to centimeter accuracy, in real time.
This year, two surveyors, representatives of TERIA, tested the PYX receiver to carry out a trajectography of the ascent. The high-performance technology embedded in PYX proved its effectiveness in difficult conditions.
In 2021, Mont Blanc will be measured at 4,807.81 metres.
DISCOVERING ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREATEST PEAKS
When three mountaineering enthusiasts told us about their crazy project, there was no doubt that TERIA wanted to be part of it: the oxygen-free ascent of Manaslu in Nepal, the eighth highest peak in the world.
Maialen BERTERRECHE, Frédéric ARBURUA and Jakes SALLABEREMBORDE, three summiters who love the high mountains, have taken up the challenge of climbing the 8,163-metre Manaslu summit in autumn 2021.
The seven-week expedition involved successive acclimatisation treks between camps at 4500 to 7600 m to prepare their bodies for the increasing scarcity of oxygen. Our PYX receiver was very much in demand during this ascent, measuring the different camps.
It was an intense 41-day expedition that our trio of climbers coped with brilliantly in very changeable and testing climatic conditions.
Frédéric and Jakes reached the summit of Manaslu(8163 m) without oxygen. Maialen, true to her promise not to wear an oxygen mask, turned back at 7800m and returned to the last camp at 7600m.
A fine performance by all those involved, and one to be admired !
HEAD FOR THE SOUTH POLE WITH ANTARCTICA 2.0°C
The Antarctica 2°C project took place over a five-month period starting in October 2021.
Six students from the ENS, driven by a desire to share the scientific process, set off on an expedition from Marseille to Antarctica aboard a sailing boat, La Louise, fitted out as a travelling laboratory.
This interdisciplinary scientific project covered 5 areas of research: climatology, metal biogeochemistry and microbiology, microplastics, sociology of science and penguin population biology.
TERIA, a partner of the event, supported Lana DENOURRY on the penguin monitoring mission.
TERIA provided 2 PYX receivers and a post-processing service to support her study. To ensure the success of her project, Lana received personalised training from our technical department.
Many thanks to Instadrone, another partner in the project, who recommended us for this scientific adventure.
We’re also delighted to be working with Yellowscan on this environmental research project.
It’s an approach that’s close to TERIA’s heart and in line with the company’s values and commitments as a company with a mission.
Throughout these various expeditions, the PYX solution has demonstrated its effectiveness. It incorporates a latest-generation GNSS chip for ultra-fast convergence in RTK or by L-Band satellite.
This automatic switchover guarantees maximum comfort during measurement campaigns. During the expedition, PYX was able to demonstrate its robustness, with IP68 protection. Resistant to dust, drops, mud and rain. PYX is THE all-round partner, even in the most extreme conditions.
